The previous posts have been a bit esoteric, starting with spiritual bypassing, which led us to “the amorphous” part of the greater reality, and the development of self-realization vs. God-realization in entities experiencing that reality. This post will explore something we may access in meditation: What is emptiness or pure awareness?
What is the small mind vs. big mind?
John Welwood is a psychotherapist and a Buddhist practitioner, who studied with Chögyam Trungpa and other masters. His lifelong interest has been to integrate psychological and spiritual work, as presented in his brilliant book, “Toward a Psychology of Awakening: Buddhism, Psychotherapy, and the Path of Personal and Spiritual Transformation.” He wrote:
- Modern psychology’s view of the mind is limited. It focuses on the contents of the mind (conceptual thought, rational analysis), while ignoring the stream of consciousness that flows from moment-to-moment, which the Buddhists understand as a mindstream.
- The “small mind” (surface level of conceptual activity) is distinct from the “big mind” that is pure awareness (pure presence and nonconceptual awareness, or nonthought).
He gave this analogy: The contents of the mind are like pails and buckets floating in a stream. The mindstream is like the dynamic flowing of the water. But pure awareness is like the water itself, unchanging in its essential wetness or fluidity, whether it’s still or turbulent at times.
- When we develop more subtle or sustained “witnessing” through practices like meditation, we discover the gaps or spaces between our discrete thoughts, feelings, and perceptions.
- Those are the spaces between the contents or the forms (pails/buckets of water) that our consciousness takes. They give us a glimpse into the larger background awareness that is self-existing, always present in both movement and stillness, whether we notice it or not.
This larger nature of consciousness has no shape or form, which is why it’s called “emptiness.”
What is emptiness or pure awareness?
Guy Needler (“The Origin Speaks”) has given us a new level of understanding about the greater reality, and the various environments, entities, and events within it. He said that Buddhists and other Yogis may have different levels of awareness that could be classified in two ways:
- Pure awareness or “nothingness” can be experienced as floating in a sea of latent connectivity with the True Energetic Self (TES/Higher Self/Oversoul). It is a knowingness that one is connected, but not turned on to the connection with the TES, and all that it experiences and knows. In essence, this is not truly pure awareness for it is latent.
- Further to this is the connection to Source (SE1/God), which can be experienced as a high state of bliss – delightful nothingness and a significantly higher feeling of pure but latent awareness. This is the function of initial connectivity with our creator, and it is difficult to get beyond this immersive state to initiate God realization, which is intelligent communion (communication or dialogue) with the Source.
Each way is a level of accessibility and a resultant personal experience. Both states must be experienced and moved beyond to effect realization or communication at TES or Source level. Most Buddhists and Yogis become consumed by these experiential states and don’t move beyond them; hence, most teachings only progress the student to these levels.
Why do some enlightened beings dismiss any notions of structure (e.g. multiverse or omniverse) as a “belief system”?
Needler said they get stuck in the bliss state, and as a result of that, they basically start to experience what he calls a “pseudo-amorphous state.” He explained:
- Being stuck in the bliss state means that you’re not experiencing anything other than bliss. So being in this bliss state gives you this feeling of pseudo-amorphous or pseudo-formlessness. And you miss the little bits of structure that are above that.
- In the bliss state, they feel the essence of amorphousness or formlessness through bliss. Unless they can break free of that, they will never experience the higher levels of structure.
Now one of those higher levels of structure is our Source (SE1/God), and the other Source Entities (SE2-SE12). One of those higher levels of structure is the sentience that we call the Origin or the Absolute (our ultimate creator). He added:
- The amorphousness is the highest part of the structure. We go from the formless to the form to understand it. We start to understand that we have created a structure to work with, and that structure is a way of experiencing the amorphous in greater detail (see What Is the Amorphous? – Big Picture Questions.com).
- Thus, the multiverse and omniversal state IS the amorphous. But it’s just a small part of it (less than one tenth of 1% of the Origin’s area), which is currently being experienced by all the Source Entities (see Where Did The Origin Come From? – Big Picture Questions.com).
So those who meditate and get to these bliss states experience a bit of the amorphous or have a “pseudo” experience of amorphousness. They start to think that there isn’t a structure there.
- But they’re actually having to move through structure to get to that state. And even though they’re getting there, they’re blocking themselves, not moving beyond it to go through higher levels of structure to go back into the true amorphous state.
- That truly amorphous state includes functions of the Source and functions of the Origin, that is currently unmapped or isn’t being classified as being sentient. It’s latent. Then they dismiss the fact that there is structure there.
To sum things up, Needler said: “The amorphous in understanding itself creates. Whatever it creates is structured, because in the assignment of something as being amorphous, we are creating a structure. It might be a structure of one thing, but it’s still structured. And so, if you like, the denial of structure within the amorphous is the denial of the amorphous full stop.”
Final Thoughts
It seems that there is a lot more to “emptiness” than meets the eye (or the small mind or big mind). Most people are projected from entities that are restricted to the environment of our Source Entity (SE1/God), and their awareness and experiences reflect that.
A few people (like Guy Needler, a pure OM entity) have access to many environments beyond that, so they can describe the even bigger picture to us, which I find just fascinating.
There are a couple of more topics to explore in this esoteric series, so stay tuned. 🙂

For some still unconscious and unknown reason the I AM that i am sent my awareness into this infinite reflection of awareness of awareness of awareness ad infinitum and sensed the infinite eternal allness of this eternal infinite state of consciousness with no dualistic time-space-energy manifestation thing to be aware of. Just Total bliss. But then a Celestial Tour Guide came to me and asked me, “Larry, do you want to to see something really cool?”
Obviously the I that experience both non-duality and duality at the same time … is something I experientially know we are all going to be able to do some time in our future … at will. But for now all I can do is marvel at what is in store.
