Previously we learned that many traditions (Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Sufism, etc.) describe similar paths of spiritual development, which include a painful stage called the dark night of the soul. But Do-It-Yourself (DIY) meditators may also encounter some pleasurable stages on their path. Is following your bliss the goal? Can you get addicted to self-bliss?
What is the point of being here?
We know that all learning and evolution involves a level of “suffering” while we exist on the physical plane. That’s why we’ve had incarnations of various entities to help us navigate through our path. In “The History of God,” Guy Needler wrote:
- Jesus taught us the Golden Rule of treating others as you’d like to be treated, and the importance of forgiveness instead of persecution of others.
- Buddha taught us how to use a mental vehicle for true enlightenment, which is the ability to contact the higher self and to understand the real meaning of life on Earth.
But in the past, even Buddhists in the same country couldn’t communicate with each other, because of geographic barriers among them. Various groups developed their own practices.
- Nowadays, we don’t need to reinvent the wheel, because we can share our experiences and learning with many other people, who are able start at a higher level than we did.
- That’s progress for the individual and the species, unless they’re resistant to it (below).
The whole point of us being here is to gain experience or “evolutionary content” that we can share with others, not just humans but many other beings in our universe and beyond.
What might we experience on our path?
Some practitioners (especially the yogic and Buddhist geek types) have described their own experiences in exquisite detail, so that DIY meditators can have an idea of what to expect.
- For example, Daniel M. Ingram, MD illustrated the typical pain/pleasure scale of the various stages of Buddhist insight meditation (Source: Vimeo; click to enlarge):
Note: Some stages (e.g. A&P #4) are higher on the pleasure scale, while other stages (e.g. Dark night #5-10) are more painful. We cycle through these peaks and valleys more than once.
What is the kundalini effect?
Kundalini is the inner potential energy that lies latent in every individual. It is a natural part of spiritual advancement. The process occurs in several stages (see Kundalini Awakening Index):
- Prana (life force energy) usually flows in Ida or Pingala nadi (below, click to enlarge).
- Prana is made to flow in both channels evenly, then in the central Sushumna channel.
- Then kundalini energy is awakened and lead upward, so it rises to the crown chakra.
- It can be activated by various methods, including yoga, breathing techniques, certain mantra vibrations or through initiation by a yogi whose kundalini is already awakened.
- It can also be triggered by near death experiences, intense personal crises or it may occur spontaneously, which can leave the person frightened, confused or misdiagnosed as being mentally ill (e.g. schizophrenia, psychosis).
Needler explained the kundalini effect is the conscious movement of energy up the central sushumna nadi, then through the front of the body and then back down again. When you feel the energies rush up and down the spine, the effect can be profound and intoxicating.
What are the signs of kundalini awakening?
The “physio-kundalini syndrome” is characterized by three types of manifestations: motor, sensory and psychological, which are summarized in the Table below (click to enlarge):
The awakened kundalini energy transforms the individual’s body-mind system: body is in mind; mind is not in body (see Kundalini Awakening – Kundalini reaches Sahasrara chakra).
Can you get addicted to self-bliss?
Just like some people may get stuck in the dark night phase for months or years (e.g. Mother Teresa), other people may get addicted to self-bliss states. Guy Needler explained:
- The addiction is due to absorption or being a sponge for the energy. Most meditators don’t move beyond the bliss levels of being. In that case bliss is a trap.
- But those that direct or work as a conduit for the energy are able to move beyond it.
- By analogy, it’s like being a moth that is attracted to the light. Some get burned by the light, while others move around it.
Itzhak Bentov (“A Brief Tour of Higher Consciousness”) described two groups of enlightened souls sitting in the dark void outside the sphere of manifest creation, as discussed in Is There a Manual On How To Become a Spiritual Master? – Big Picture Questions.com (click to enlarge).

- One side (“Nirvana”) had people totally immersed in their meditation, interested solely in their own intense bliss, not about others. It’s a blind alley of evolution, so they’re stuck in self-bliss and will not evolve beyond this state.
- The other side had Buddha, St. Augustine and others, who had bypassed Nirvana and were directing pure consciousness through their bodies to influence a planet or beings in a positive way. They will keep evolving beyond those stuck in self-bliss.
Therefore, the goal is to go beyond the bliss state, to become a conduit rather than a sponge for pure consciousness in order to evolve to unbounded awareness.
Is there bliss elsewhere in the omniverse?
In “Beyond the Source Book 1,” Guy Needler described how one of the 12 Source Entities, namely Source Entity Three (SE3) created a whole universe of bliss. Needler reported:
- It looked like an amorphous white ball that undulated and felt warm and welcoming, pure of heart, totally euphoric, and free of all restrictions.
- The state of bliss differed from that of our Source Entity (SE1), because SE3’s universe has no such thing as negativity, i.e. no bad or detrimental experiences.
They have entities and planets of all shapes, and space that looks like pure white light (not black), because they exist at much higher frequencies (corresponding to full dimensions 14-15 than our multiverse (FD 1-12). Every entity is in blissful harmony with everything they do.
- No one does anything just for self, but for the good of all, including the environment. Everything is achieved and achievable, and done in love and light.
- Sounds delightful, right? The only catch is that such a blissful environment limits opportunities for growth and evolution. The other problem is they have no animals!
- By the way, Confucius is an ascended master sent from SE3 to explore us and our world.
In comparison, our multiverse is made of numerous nested universes and dimensions within dimensions. It has different levels of positivity and negativity with a wide range of evolutionary opportunities for all kinds of entities with varying levels of sentience.
- Our experience is more profound, because it is more difficult to incarnate at the lower frequency levels.
- Our evolutionary content is accrued in a much more efficient or faster way than in a bliss universe. But we could learn something from them, just as they do from us.
According to Needler, incarnation is a complete level of evolution above that which you can experience while you’re energetic. While some people may be reinventing the wheel in their own way and at their own pace, trust that we’re still making progress here. 🙂
Great thank you ! I would love to think more about things like this but i can’t since i have med school work but your site is a great time saver and very illuminating ,looking forward to more posts 🙂
Yes, you’ve got it! The point is not to sit in eternal bliss by yourself in a cave. We’re here to learn, experience, exchange and help others evolve, even after personal bliss states are reached. 🙂
Great post, but in the end isn’t our goal to keep on evolving and gaining experience so our origin entity itself evolves? Staying in eternal bliss sounds really good but isn’t it procrastination times infinity?
