Previously, we have talked about the “spiritual ego” that develops in many people as part of their spiritual journey. These days there is a lot of confusion, disinformation (by deliberate intent) and misinformation (by mistake) in our spiritual communities. It’s a good time to check where our “spirituality” is leading us, since some people have “married” their spirituality with conspiracies and extreme political ideologies. Richard Rudd gave a great lecture on “Spirituality and the Spiritual Ego” that enlightens us all. I urge you to watch it on YouTube. Enjoy!

Here are 18 Patterns of Spiritual Egos (summarized by me):
- Spiritual materialist – trapped by spiritual glamour, seeking fame and fortune
- Spiritual victim – blind follower of teachings or teacher without question, no discernment
- Spiritual escapist – feels already enlightened with nothing to do, wants to get out of here
- Spiritual extremist – addicted to bliss or highs from meditation, drugs, yoga, etc.
- Spiritual provocateur – rebel who debunks or debases spiritual paths of others
- Spiritual dogmatist – puritan who feels superiority about their teacher or teachings
- Spiritual cynic or skeptic – looking for flaws, finds them everywhere, won’t change views
- Spiritual sniper – gives critical comments, then vanishes, doesn’t want resolution
- Spiritual conspiracist – tries to get others to believe in their favorite conspiracies (e.g. QAnon, Illuminati, aliens, reptilians, 5G, covid denial, anti-vax or other disinformation); if you don’t believe what they believe from their own “research,” you become one of the “victims”
- Spiritual fantasist – lost in magical thinking, can become a form of spiritual bypassing
- Spiritual savior or imposer – their healing offers all the answers, looking for recognition
- Spiritual narcissist – knows a lot of spiritual stuff but has little self-inquiry or humility
- Spiritual pleaser – people pleaser who goes along with everything, can’t say no or discern
- Spiritual tourist – never settles on one teacher or teaching, endless seeking, never finding
- Spiritual comedian – uses humor or false modesty to deflect true connection and depth
- Spiritual processor – addicted to the process of processing their emotional trauma, never healed
- Spiritual know-it-all – disengaged intellectual, who becomes defensive when their knowledge is challenged
- Spiritual succeeder – thinks they are already a master, enlightened, so they stop seeking, divides people into categories (e.g. awake vs. asleep)
